NATA Disability Group

One Funky World supports the Naunau ‘o e ‘Alamaite Tonga Association (NATA). NATA is a non-government, not for profit, association formed by people with disability who as a group advocate and help empower people of differing abilities in the Kingdom of Tonga.

Tonga is situated in the southern Pacific Ocean and comprises a total of 176 islands many of which are uninhabited. It has a total population of just over 100,000 people with GDP per capita of $7,344 (US Dollars).

People living with disability in Tonga are amongst the most marginalised members of society and are often living in poverty and vulnerable, at-risk situations. Disability services are not currently factored into Government spending priorities. In March 2005, the Tonga Red Cross Society conducted a National Disability Identification Survey in Tonga. Over three quarters of the country was surveyed, of which 574 people were identified as being in urgent need of a wheelchair.

One Funky assisted NATA with the lease of an office and donated office equipment. Together with NATA they have distributed wheelchairs to people requiring a wheelchair and helped repair chairs that are damaged or ill-fitting.
