Disability Sport:

Disability sport in Tonga is still a slowly growing area. A number of athletes have had the opportunity to attend major international events, including most recently the Paralympic Games in Athens 2004.

Annual Secondary Schools Athletics Championships - 20 April 2005

Held at Telfiva Stadium on the 20th April 2005, the annual Secondary Schools Athletics Championships attracted school teams from all over Tonga.

A team of students from the Hearing and Speech Impaired Unit entered a number of track relay events and blitzed!

Tongan Bodybuilding Championships - 24 December 2004

The Tongan National Body Building Championship were held on 24 December 2004 at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall.

Out of all the ripped dudes there, newcomer Siaosi Lynch was the one to watch, winning his category at the championships with a pair of well oiled biceps and a half decent set of pecs to match..

Siaosi now plans to represent Tonga in his class at future international body building competitions.

 

Tonga vs Samoa Athletics Carnival - 12 November 2004


The Honourable Mailefihi of Tonga competing in Javelin.

Samoa won the Tonga vs Samoa Disability Athletics Carnival that was held at Nuku'alofa's Teufaiva Stadium, on Friday 12 November 2004.

Samoa who fielded 9 athletes and won 12 gold medals, eight silver and three bronze; while the host Tonga, who fielded 44 athletes won 9 gold medals, 13 silver and 18 bronze.

The Minister of Health, Honourable Viliami Tangi, who opened the carnival and presented medals, expressed his strong support for disability sports in Tonga . He saw this as a way to not only help improve the lives of people living with disability, but also to increase Tonga’s chances of winning medals at international sporting events such as the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.

In his closing address, Mr Nofovaleane Mapusua, Chef de Mission and Medal Winner of the Samoa Team, and the President of the Samoan Disability Council, "Nuanua o le Alofa" or Rainbow of Love, hailed the carnival a success because, "people living with disability were able to really express their ability rather than disability"

It is proposed that another carnival will be held in Samoa in late 2005.


Tongan National Games for People with Disability - September 2003

September 2003 saw the first Tongan National Games for people with disability. The event was spread over 2 days, the first day being hald at Teufaiva Stadium, the second at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall. Participants were drawn largely from the 'Ofa Tui Amanaki Centre, the Hearing and Speech Impaired Unit and the Alonga Centre who competed for their respective houses.

Male Champion Athlete of the day was awarded to Mr Tevita Finau Latu of the Alonga Centre, and female Champion Athlete of the day went to Paea of the Hearing and Speech Impaired Unit.
